The Aviation cocktail was new to me. I hadn’t heard about it until after I had watched last week’s episode of Lovecraft Country.

Thousands of us, at 9pm EST were tweeting about this unofficial drink to sip while watching HBO’s new hot show.

I was intrigued.

My mission for the week was clear: secure materials and make boozy concoction ASAP.

Mission complete.

So, a few things before I get into the recipe, the ingredients that were available to me at Total Wine were kinda expensive… and Maraschino Liqueur is hard to find if you forget the “s” before the “c” when attempting to poorly spell it to store associate.

Last thing, if you like tart, floral drinks, this is for you… I don’t, and that was an expensive lesson.

  • 2 oz gin (I used Aviation, but any decent gin will do)
  • 1 oz maraschino liqueur
  • .25-.5 oz crème de violette
  • .5 oz fresh lemon juice
  • Maraschino cherry for garnish

Combine the gin, liqueur, crème de violette, and lemon juice with ice in a cocktail shaker.

Pour into a chilled cocktail coupe glass and garnish with a maraschino cherry and/or lemon peel.

*For a sweeter drink that brings out the floral notes, add .5oz of simple syrup.

You’re welcome!
